When Can I Expect My ITR Refund?

Over 24 lakh refunds were stuck for 90+ days last cycle — mostly over mismatches that were avoidable. Here's exactly how refunds work for AY 2026-27, why yours might be delayed, and what actually speeds it up.

For AY 2026-27, getting your refund fast is less about waiting and more about passing an AI-driven check the moment you file. Here's what's actually happening behind the scenes — and how to stay ahead of it.

01

What Is an Income Tax Refund?

An income tax refund is the excess amount the department returns to you when the tax you've already paid — through TDS, TCS, advance tax, or self-assessment tax — is more than your actual tax liability for the year. It's only paid out once you file your ITR; there's no automatic refund without a return on record.

Quick Formula

Refund = (TDS + TCS + Advance Tax + Self-Assessment Tax paid) − Actual Tax Liability determined on your return

02

Refund Speed by ITR Form

Not all returns move at the same pace. The form you file has a direct bearing on how quickly CPC clears it:

ITR-1

Salaried individuals, single house property, income under Rs. 50 lakh.

Fastest — often 10-20 working days
ITR-4

Presumptive business/professional income under 44AD/44ADA.

Fast — straightforward verification
ITR-2

Capital gains, multiple properties, foreign assets.

Slower — additional schedule checks
ITR-3

Business/professional income with regular books, audit cases.

Slowest — manual review common
03

How the Refund Is Calculated

Here's a simple worked example for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) under the new regime:

ParticularsAmount
Total income (A)Rs. 13,00,000
Tax liability as per new regime (B)Rs. 1,08,000
TDS + Advance Tax already paid (C)Rs. 1,42,000
Refund due (C − B)Rs. 34,000

Key Filing Dates for AY 2026-27

Filing early doesn't just avoid the late fee — it puts your return ahead of the pre-deadline surge that always slows CPC down.

Why Refunds Are Getting Delayed in 2026

The department now runs an AI-driven NUDGE campaign that cross-checks every return against your Annual Information Statement (AIS) in real time. Out of roughly 8.8 crore returns filed last cycle, over 24 lakh stayed stuck beyond 90 days — most flagged for reconciliation gaps, not actual fraud. The department has until 31 December to clear the backlog.

  • Flag80G donation mismatch — your NGO hasn't yet uploaded the donation to AIS, even though your receipt is valid.
  • FlagHRA claim mismatch — rent or landlord PAN details don't tally with your employer's TDS filing.
  • FlagUnreported interest income — even a small savings account or FD interest entry missing from your return but present in AIS.
  • FlagBank validation failure — changed IFSC, closed account, or name mismatch with PAN.
  • FlagOutstanding demand (Sec 245) — current refund adjusted against an old, sometimes disputed, tax demand.

How to Check Your Refund Status

  1. Confirm e-verificationProcessing only begins once your ITR is e-verified — check this first.
  2. Log in to the e-filing portalGo to incometax.gov.in → e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns.
  3. Check the processing statusLook for "Under Processing," "Refund Issued," "Refund Failed," or "Refund Adjusted."
  4. Cross-check your AISIf stuck beyond 4-5 weeks, compare your return against AIS for any unreported entries.
  5. Raise a grievance if neededNo update for 60-90 days? File a grievance on the portal or reach out to CPC.

Interest on Delayed Refund — Section 244A

Your Right, Not a Bonus

Under Section 244A, the department pays simple interest at 0.5% per month (6% per annum) on delayed refunds, provided the refund is at least 10% of your total tax liability. If filed on or before the due date, interest runs from 1st April of the assessment year; late filers earn interest only from their actual filing date.

Worked example: If a refund of Rs. 34,000 is credited in November 2026 instead of the expected August, that's roughly 3-4 months of interest at 0.5%/month — about Rs. 500-680 — credited along with the refund.

Don't Forget

This interest is taxable as "Income from Other Sources" in the year you receive it, and will show up in next year's AIS.

Real Scenario

Case Study
Priya — Salaried, Mumbai
ITR-1, AY 2026-27
Priya filed on 20th July 2026 and e-verified immediately. Her Form 16 showed TDS of Rs. 1,42,000 against a liability of Rs. 1,08,000 — a Rs. 34,000 refund due. She'd also claimed a Rs. 15,000 donation under 80G that her NGO hadn't yet uploaded to AIS. Her return sat "Under Processing" for 6 weeks until the NGO's filing updated and the mismatch cleared.
Tip: Confirm your 80G, HRA, or insurance-premium claims are reflected in AIS before you file — not after.

Refund IssuedRefund approved and sent to your bank; usually credited in a few working days
Refund FailedBank transfer rejected — usually a bank validation issue
Refund Adjusted (Sec 245)Refund used to settle an outstanding demand from a prior year
Defective ReturnReturn needs correction under Section 139(9) before processing continues
10

Do's and Don'ts for a Faster Refund

DO

  • Reconcile your AIS/26AS before filing, not after
  • Pre-validate your bank account and confirm IFSC
  • E-verify within 30 days of filing
  • File early — before the last-week surge
  • Respond to portal notices within the given deadline

DON'T

  • Claim 80G/HRA without checking AIS reflects it
  • Ignore a "Defective Return" notice
  • Assume "Refund Failed" will resolve itself
  • Wait past 90 days without filing a grievance
  • Forget to report Section 244A interest next year
